The Aftermath of Janus v. AFSCME and the Future of Public Sector Unions

September 20, 2018
Chicago, IL; Illinois Municipal League Annual Conference

While changes were expected to occur in 2016 as a result of Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, the passing of Justice Antonin Scalia gave unions a momentary reprieve. However, on June 27, the Supreme Court issued its decision in Janus v. AFSCME, and it was a game changer. During this presentation at the Illinois Municipal League Annual Conference, Carlos Arévalo will examine the genesis of public sector agency fees in Abood v. Detroit Bd. Of Education and subsequent court decisions, the impact of Janus on municipalities and their employees and will conclude with a survey of state administrative and legislative efforts to protect public sector unions.
