On November 3, 2006, SmithAmundsen's
Health Care
and
Aviation
Practice Groups hosted a half-day seminar on Planning for Bird Flu Pandemic. Attendees to the seminar learned to understand the Bird Flu virus and how it is spread. Speakers assessed the risk for individual workplaces and their potential response to a pandemic or other disaster, how a corporation or hospital could keep running if large numbers of employees became ill or could not come to work, and explored some of the ethical considerations surrounding such an event. The seminar also included a discussion of the federal government's response to the Avian Flu risk through current and proposed regulations. Topics involved the practical, economic, and legal ramifications of responding to a potentially infected airline passenger.
