Linda F. Newman
Partner
Linda Newman is a nurse-attorney, and a partner in the firm’s Chicago office focusing her practice on health care and medicare compliance mediation and arbitration along with professional liability issues. Her experience at SmithAmundsen includes the defense of hospitals; home health care agencies, involving the defense of both nursing and pharmacists; and long term care facilities. Linda's non litigation experience includes review of contracts, preparation of plans of correction, and arbitration agreements. She also consults on potential Medicare compliance pitfalls. She has significant experience in areas of complex medical cases including failure to diagnose breast cancer; aortic dissection, myocardial infarctions, and cauda equina syndrome. She also has been involved with several birth injury cases such as stillbirth, spastic cerebral palsy, and shoulder dystocia. Linda has a special interest in representing both nurses and physicians in board review hearings regarding licensure and/or discipline, and medical legal issues. She has focused a portion of her practice on matters relating to the ethical and legal issues surrounding in vitro procedures and fertility clinics, including drafting a sample contract for informed consent issues pertaining to IVF storage. Prior to joining the firm, Linda worked as a critical care nurse at a large university-affiliated hospital in the Chicago area. Additionally, Linda earned a masters degree in health law and wrote her thesis on death and dying issues and patient autonomy.
Linda is certified in Healthcare Compliance, "CHC." Linda is also trained as a mediator and arbitrator for health care cases and issues.
In 2010, Linda was named to the Illinois Rising Stars* list, a peer review designation published by Law & Politics magazine.
