Carmel M. Cosgrave is a founding partner of SmithAmundsen and is chairperson of the Health Care Practice Group. Carmel is an accomplished trial attorney, handling cases in both state and federal courts. She concentrates her practice in the health care field, but her practice also includes defense of corporations in a variety of complex litigation matters. She represents health care systems, long term care operators, assisted living facilities, and medical device manufacturers in litigation and other matters. Those other matters include issues involving HIPAA, HITECH and electronic medical records. Her practice also includes representing physicians, nurses, dentists, and other medical professionals before the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.

Carmel has been named to either the Illinois Super Lawyers* list, a peer review designation published by Law & Politics magazine and/or the Leading Lawyer list for medical malpractice defense, another peer review list published by the Law Bulletin Publishing Company, since 2005. She has also received an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell for her legal ability and ethics.

In addition to her practice, Carmel served as President and Past-President of the Chicago Hospital Risk Managers Society (CHRMS). Carmel is also a member of the executive committee of the Chicago Bar Association’s Judicial Evaluation Committee.
