Recent Initiatives

SmithAmundsen attorneys maintain a strong commitment to the legal profession outside of their practice. Our attorneys serve in leadership roles in organizations such as: the Hispanic National Bar Association, the Lesbian and Gay Bar Association of Chicago, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, the Chinese American Bar Association, the Professional Women’s Club of Chicago (Board Member), and the Fetzer Institute, to name just a few appointments. Our firm is proud to support these organizations and the work our attorneys do with them.

In addition, our recent activities include:

  • Hosted a firm-wide happy hour networking event in to learn about the differences each of our employees brings to the firm.
  • Sponsorship of the Equality Illinois Education Project as well as inclusion as one of Illinois’s top law firms for LBGT diversity and inclusion by Equality Illinois’s 2014 “Raising the Bar.”
  • Hosted clients at the Equality Illinois 2014 Gala.
  • Attended the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois (WBAI) Judicial Reception and placed ad in tribute book.
  • Sponsorship of the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois (WBAI) Annual Dinner.
  • Hosted a happy hour at a local bar celebrating Chicago’s LGBT PRIDE week. Attendees were comprised of the firm’s employees, clients, contacts, and friends in the LGBT community. Local organizations, including Beer on Clark, Clark Street Beach Bar, Hamburger Mary’s, LKH Management (Hydrate, Elixir, Replay, Halstead’s), Twisted Vine, Mini Bar, Patron’s Hacienda and North End sponsored the event.
  • Hosted “Starting My Startup: Common Pitfalls & Best Practices” along with the National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP), the Chinese American Bar Association (CABA) and the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA). Several panelists, including two attorneys from SmithAmundsen, spoke on protecting and negotiating startups through multiple stages of growth.
  • Hosted an internal women's rainmaker roundtable panel. The program featured a panel of several female partners, including Carmel Cosgrave, Julie Rubin, Julie Proscia and Heather Bailey. The panelists discussed various instances and issues that are pertinent to women in today’s legal marketplace.
  • Hosted a Black History Month Artist Appreciation event for the firm’s employees, clients, and contacts. The conference center was transformed into an art gallery, featuring local prominent artists from Nych Gallery, as well as photographer Will Knight. The food was catered by local company Flavor180.
  • Hosted an internal firm luncheon in honor of Hispanic heritage month
  • Attended the Hispanic National Bar Association’s annual conference in Denver, Colorado.
  • Presented “Labor and Employment Laws: What You Need to Know,” Hispanic American Construction Industry Association
  • Presented “Construction Documentation: Contract and Change Orders,” Hispanic American Construction Industry Association
  • Attended the Hispanic American Construction Industry Association 34th Annual Awards Banquet
  • Sponsorship of the Chinese American Bar Association Holiday Event
  • Attended the Filipino American Lawyers Association of Chicago Summer Soiree
  • Sponsorship of the Puerto Rican Bar Association Gala
  • Sponsorship and support of the Thurgood Marshall trial team.
  • Sponsorship of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Dinner.
  • Sponsorship of the Hispanic American Construction Industry Holiday Event.
  • Moderated presentation, "Issues and Questions Unique to Mexico at the Mexico Judicial Conference" at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law.
  • Sponsorship of Hispanic Bar Association’s 2012 Annual Convention: El Futuro Sin Limite/Future Without Limits.
  • Established a SmithAmundsen Scholarship in partnership with the Illinois Institute of Technology/Chicago-Kent College of Law to reward excellence in legal writing and the recipient’s contribution to diversity.
  • Sponsorship of the University of Wisconsin Law School’s annual Legal Education Opportunities Banquet (2008-2011).
  • Hosted breakfast and panel discussion, “Life as an associate at SmithAmundsen,” for minority students.
  • Organizers and panelists at the 2009 Asian American Bar Association’s Law Forum.
  • Hosted a diversity presentation by Dr. Arin Reeves of the Athens Group for firm partners and associates.
