Trial Academy
At SmithAmundsen, our associates are actively involved in all aspects of litigated cases, including preparing for and appearing in court. To ensure they are properly equipped to represent our clients in court, junior associates put their trial skills to work at the SmithAmundsen Trial Academy. Occurring every two years (at the culmination of the trial advocacy portion of our training program), firm partners lead associates through a two-day mock trial. The associates argue motions in limine, select jurors, make opening statements, conduct direct and cross examinations of live witnesses, and present closing arguments. The partners serve as judges and coaches, ruling on objections and providing guidance, instruction, and practical advice from their experience. The Academy enables the firm's associates to hone their litigation skills and obtain feedback and one-on-one instruction from some of the Midwest's most experienced trial lawyers.
